From the recording Minneapolis

This song recounts the events that unfolded in the Twin Cities during Operation Metro Surge and the corresponding demonstrations against that deployment of federal troops in January and February of this year. All of this took place during our cross-country car trip that took us through the Twin Cities during this time, and the song is inspired by those events, as well as informed by my own experiences and those of some of the players on this recording who were tear gassed and had automatic weapons pointed in their faces for no legitimate reason. My heart goes out to all of those affected by the senseless violence. This song is dedicated to the memory of Renee Good and Alex Pretti who didn’t deserve to die.

Lyrics

I don’t think I can take it anymore
I feel broken inside
Because I just drove through Minneapolis and
A little piece of me died

You got brownshirt fascist wannabe cops throwing people in unmarked vans
So called fucking leaders telling us it’s a great plan
But they never signed up for this
In Minneapolis

They call them paid agitators
They look like peaceful demonstrators
Hey - I wanna know what the hell ever happened
to rubber bullets anyway?

Armed, masked racist thugs with zip ties and no i.d.
Rustlin’ up everybody who’s brown – their cosplay fantasy
Bringing hate and prejudice
To Minneapolis

Waging war on us all
In the land of the free
In subzero temperatures
Throwing little kids in the street
I never thought that I’d live to see such a wicked scene as this
in Minneapolis

And the worthless scribblers of the corporate press, they didn’t miss a beat
Lining their pockets with the profits from the footage of the carnage on the street
But the truth is burning brighter than the lies that find defeat
in Minneapolis
